Bio
I’m Midichi, a contemporary artist based in Ghana.
I’ve been making art my whole life, but in 2015, I committed fully to painting and never looked back. Before that, I was a fashion designer with my own brand—a path that taught me visual discipline, storytelling through form, and the power of personal style. I grew up around textiles, tailoring, and bold aesthetics, so stepping into art felt less like a departure and more like a natural evolution.
My journey as a painter began with instinct, not instruction. While visiting the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, I stood in front of a piece and thought, “My work could be here someday.” That moment shifted everything. That same night, I sketched a character with oversized eyes that seemed to stare back at me—bold, unsettling, and familiar. When I returned to Ghana, I bought supplies and started painting on canvas for the first time. No tutorials. No plan. Just vision and urgency.
Those early works—marked by red skin tones and intense, expressive eyes—set the foundation for my visual language. They reflect the energy of self-discovery and the layered emotions of identity, memory, and place. My work is bold, minimal, and emotionally direct. I often paint figures that are both personal and archetypal, fusing contemporary African narratives with pop culture, spiritual undertones, and surreal touches.
Since then, I’ve continued to develop a distinctive visual style that merges design precision with raw expression. My background in fashion still shows up—in my use of color, composition, and character. I see every painting as a kind of wearable emotion, something that lingers in your head like a lyric or a look.
I’ve exhibited locally and continue to expand my practice with collectors and audiences across borders. Whether I’m painting, sketching, or developing new projects, I’m driven by the idea that art can shift how people see themselves and the world around them.
Thanks for stepping into my world. Stay a while.
